Eddie Van Halen's very first guitar was a Teisco Del Ray WG-4L, bought from Sears for about $100 when he turned twelve in 1967. The Japanese-made guitar's four pickups and row of rocker switches immediately caught his eye as a kid, and since his family couldn't afford an amplifier at the time, he learned to play it entirely unamplified on the kitchen table, letting the wood itself project the sound. His father Jan eventually traded in a Bundy flute to buy him a Gibson Les Paul in 1969, likely including the original Teisco as part of the exchange, closing out this guitar's role as the true starting point of one of rock's most influential careers.
