The Gibson Les Paul SG Custom of 1961 to 1962 marks the transitional period when Gibson redesigned the Les Paul body into the thinner, double-cutaway shape that would become the SG, before the Les Paul name was dropped from the model entirely. It carried the Custom appointments of block inlays, multiple humbuckers and a Maestro vibrato, aimed at the professional end of Gibsons line. Guitars from this transitional era have been associated with players including Carlos Santana and Buddy Guy, whose blues-rooted lead styles suited the SGs brighter, more aggressive voice compared with the single-cutaway Les Paul it replaced.
This brown Flying V, built by luthier Dan Erlewine, is one of several instruments Albert King named Lucy over his career, part of a lineage that began with his original 1959 Korina Flying V and continued through custom copies from different builders including Erlewine, John Bolin and Tom Holmes as King wore through or retired earlier examples. Erlewine was among the first luthiers King commissioned for a replacement once his original Korina V became too valuable and fragile for regular touring use.
