This 1962 Fender Stratocaster in black finish represents the pre-CBS era Stratocaster considered by many players and collectors to be the high point of Fenders original design and construction quality, built before Fenders 1965 sale to CBS is generally held to have changed the instruments specification and feel. Black was a custom-order finish in this period rather than a standard colour option, making an original black 1962 Stratocaster a rarer and more sought-after example than the sunburst finish Fender shipped as standard. The Gretsch Billy-Bo Jupiter Thunderbird is a chambered solidbody electric, a modern revival of Bo Diddley's 1959 Jupiter Thunderbird design realized with Billy Gibbons. Its angular body is very light and well balanced, and a pair of TV Jones Power'Tron pickups give a hot-rodded Gretsch voice that keeps the brand's signature sparkle and twang but adds muscular midrange and enough output to push a preamp into breakup. The bridge pickup has an almost nasal bite balanced by a darker, softer neck humbucker. It is transparent and versatile, sounding good clean or distorted, and is closely associated with Gibbons and ZZ Top. Suits rock, blues-rock and rockabilly.
