The Boss FZ-3 Fuzz and the MXR CSP041 are both pedals sharing silicon, smooth, high gain. The Boss FZ-3 Fuzz leans full. The MXR CSP041 leans fuzzy and harmonically rich. Current prices: $80.17 vs $129.99.

Similarity
citedBlended from circuit-archetype lineage, dynamic feel, tone-signal overlap and tone-vector distance — the tone vector itself is derived from editorial description text, not a measured acoustic signal, so this reflects how similarly the catalog copy describes the two, not a lab measurement. Shown only within a gear class, and only where there's enough evidence to be meaningful.

Description

The Boss FZ-3 Fuzz is a back-to-basics silicon fuzz recreating classic late-1960s and early-1970s fuzz tones, built around five 2SC2458 silicon transistors for a voicing that sits between a Fuzz Face and a Tone Bender. Level, Fuzz, and Tone controls give it a thick, saturated, aggressive vintage character, with the Tone control extending its range from a high-gain Fuzz-Face-like voice into darker, more Tone-Bender-style distortion territory. Quieter in operation than many vintage fuzz circuits, it has been used by players including John Frusciante and Billy Corgan. It suits players wanting an authentic, simple vintage fuzz voice with just enough tonal range to cover both classic fuzz camps.

The MXR CSP041 Hybrid Fuzz combines the snarling, high-gain aggression of a silicon transistor with the smooth, shaggy warmth of a germanium transistor in a single fuzz circuit, generating a broad range of Fuzz Face-style distortion tones from just two controls: Output and Fuzz. Part of MXR's Custom Shop line, its minimalist two-knob layout keeps the circuit focused on tonal purity, drawing a low 2.5mA current with true hardwire bypass.
