Two humbuckers and a set or neck-through construction give it a thicker low midrange than the Gibson original, and its association with Dave Mustaine kept it a fixture in thrash.
Ritchie Blackmore played sunburst Stratocasters with maple fingerboards during his early years in Deep Purple, documented examples include an early 1971 sunburst with a maple board and four-screw neckplate and a later 1971 sunburst with a three-screw neckplate and bullet truss rod, and he was seen playing a 1970 sunburst maple-board Strat at Deep Purple's 1973 New York concert. These guitars predate the Olympic White, big-headstock, scalloped-fretboard Strats he became most associated with later in his career and during Rainbow, representing the more stock, unmodified end of his early Stratocaster use. The sunburst finish and maple board give a brighter, more traditional Strat voice than the modified guitars from his later signature era.
