The Dean V is Dean's take on the V shape, distinguished from Gibson's by the elongated pointed headstock Dean adopted in the late 1970s and a slightly wider body angle. Two humbuckers and a set or neck-through construction give it a thicker low midrange than the Gibson original, and its association with Dave Mustaine kept it a fixture in thrash.
The Gibson Custom Kirk Hammett Signature 1979 Flying V recreates the guitar that was Metallica lead guitarist Kirk Hammett's first Gibson and remains his main instrument to this day, used on every early Metallica album from Kill Em All through The Black Album. Limited to 200 units hand-built in Nashville, the Custom Shop's Murphy Lab aged each one to match the wear on Hammett's original, down to a Stars Guitars-style bridge and chrome hardware. It carries a solid mahogany body and neck, two active EMG humbuckers (an EMG 81 in the bridge and EMG H in the neck), and a rosewood board with pearloid dot inlays, delivering the high-output, aggressive thrash metal tone Hammett built his reputation on, with each guitar's certificate of authenticity personally signed by Hammett.
