The EMG JH Het Set is James Hetfield's signature active humbucker pair, developed with EMG over many prototypes to blend the articulation of passive pickups with the high output of his usual actives. The JH-N neck and JH-B bridge use larger cores than the EMG 60 and 81, with ceramic poles in the neck and steel pole pieces in the bridge for a tighter attack and cleaner low end. They deliver a high-output, articulate metal voice with powerful, tight bass, crisp defined highs and rich overtones, giving more texture and width than a standard 81 while keeping its punch. Installation is solderless. The set is central to Hetfield's modern Metallica rhythm tone.
The Gibson 490T is a humbucker pickup best known as the bridge-position pickup in the B.B. King Lucille signature ES-355, built to King's own specifications with a slightly overwound Alnico design that pairs traditional humbucker tone with a touch of extra edge and articulation. King's Lucille was designed without f-holes to cut down on feedback, and paired the 490T bridge pickup with a 490R in the neck position, along with a six-way Varitone switch and stereo output for extra tonal flexibility. The 490T on its own delivers a harmonically rich, growling bridge tone with enough clarity to stay articulate at higher gain, distinct from hotter, more compressed modern humbucker designs.
