The Epiphone G-400 is the SG built to the 1962 specification rather than the current Gibson one: full mahogany body and neck, 24.75-inch scale, two humbuckers, and the small pickguard of the early period. The thin flat body and deep double cutaway give the same light weight and upper-fret access as the Gibson, with the whole neck reachable.
The Gibson Les Paul Traditional Goldtop pairs the Traditional's vintage-leaning build — nine-hole weight relief, fat neck, '57 Classic humbuckers — with the gold finish Gibson used on the original 1952 Les Paul before sunburst arrived. The opaque gold hides a plain maple cap, which is why the finish was historically applied to tops that would not have shown figure.
