The Erlewine Lazer is a hand-built custom electric guitar featuring headless, neck-through-body construction, designed for exceptional tuning stability and comfortable portability. The Lazer weighs only 5.5 pounds and employs Mark Erlewine's patented Wineomatic headless tuning system. The 25.5 inch scale with 24 frets and rosewood fingerboard accommodate a Classic 59 style bridge humbucker with push-pull coil-tap alongside an alnico single-coil neck pickup. Wood options include mahogany, 160-year-old black walnut, and korina. According to Johnny Winter, the Lazer delivers the tonal character of a Stratocaster (trebly, cutting highs) with the playing comfort and feel of a Gibson.
This Telecaster comes from Fender's American Design Experience, a build-to-order programme that ran from 2011 to 2014 and let buyers specify tonewoods, neck profile and material, hardware, pickups and finish through a configurator before the instrument was built in Corona and shipped within about 90 days. Because every guitar was specified individually, no two are alike, and the exact configuration matters more than the model name.
