Warren Haynes plays a Gibson Les Paul 12-string, one of only two the company built for him around 1990 after Gibson Custom Shop head Rick Gembar saw him perform at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium and offered to build the instrument. Gibson has since kept a Les Paul 12-string in its catalog partly because of Haynes's association with the model, an unusual pairing since 12-string necks are far more commonly found on acoustic and semi-hollow bodies than on a solid Les Paul. Eric Clapton reportedly saw Haynes play it and remarked he hadn't seen a guitar like it since recording Layla, tying the instrument to the tradition of doubled-string electric guitar work Clapton, Duane Allman, and other blues-rock players from that era helped popularize.
