This Gibson Les Paul, styled in the SG body shape with a sideways-mounted Maestro vibrato, dates from the brief 1961-1962 transitional period when Gibson had switched the Les Paul line to the thinner, double-cutaway SG body but before Les Paul himself asked to have his name removed from the model in 1963, making guitars from this exact window historically distinct from both the earlier single-cutaway Les Pauls and the later SG-branded guitars that followed. Carlos Santana played a cherry-red 1961-62 example fitting this description at Woodstock in August 1969, its Maestro vibrato notably left disconnected, strings never attached to it, kept on the guitar mostly for balance or in hope it added sustain rather than for its intended tremolo function.
