Angus Young's modified 1970s Gibson SG Custom is best remembered from AC/DC's 1979 Hammersmith Odeon concert during the Highway to Hell tour, and continued to see occasional use into the 1980 Back in Black tour, most likely acquired during a 1978 US visit. According to his guitar tech, the guitar originally shipped in a walnut finish with three pickups and a tremolo unit, a spec distinct from the two-pickup SG Standard, in walnut with a Lyre Maestro tremolo, that had been Young's very first guitar and his main studio instrument on AC/DC's earliest albums. Together the two guitars mark different points in Young's early rig: the Standard for foundational studio work, the Custom for a specific, well-documented stretch of high-profile live shows during one of the band's most pivotal touring periods.
This Kay K-20T, though catalogued generically as an SG-style guitar, is Tom Morello's first-ever electric, a cherry-red, plywood-body SG copy with a Bigsby-style tremolo and two blade pickups that he bought for fifty dollars at Rigoni Music in Libertyville, Illinois. Made in Japan and sold cheaply in the United States, it sat untouched in a closet for four years after two guitar lessons he disliked, before becoming the guitar behind his first band, The Electric Sheep, and his earliest live shows and recordings. He later upgraded to a Gibson Explorer in the early 1980s, but decades afterward retrieved the Kay from his mother's house in Illinois, had his guitar tech set it up properly, and used it on his 2018 album The Atlas Underground, despite it never having held tuning particularly well.
