The Roland RE-301 Chorus Echo is a 1970s tape echo unit combining a magnetic tape delay, spring reverb and a chorus section in one box. Its tape-based repeats have a warm, slightly degraded, organic character with natural wow and flutter that synthesizers and digital delays struggle to mimic. Brian Setzer adopted it as his mainstay, typically setting a fast single slapback between 60 and 120 milliseconds for his rockabilly tone. It also produces lush longer echoes, ambient washes and chorus-tinged textures.
