Port City Pearl/Merino Combo vs Swart STR Tweed

The Port City Pearl/Merino Combo and the Swart STR Tweed are both amplifiers sharing full. The Swart STR Tweed leans lush and edge of breakup.

Similarity
citedBlended from circuit-archetype lineage, dynamic feel, tone-signal overlap and tone-vector distance — the tone vector itself is derived from editorial description text, not a measured acoustic signal, so this reflects how similarly the catalog copy describes the two, not a lab measurement. Shown only within a gear class, and only where there's enough evidence to be meaningful.

Description

This Port City entry is listed as a Pearl/Merino combo, pairing the naming of two distinct amplifiers in the North Carolina builder's range, which suggests either a combined configuration or an ambiguous listing. Independent coverage of Port City amplifiers is limited and the entry does not establish which amplifier it actually is. Buyers should confirm with the seller whether this is a Pearl, a Merino, or a combo version of one of them before purchase.

The Swart STR Tweed is the tweed-covered version of the STR Space Tone Reverb, a 5-watt single-ended combo with a 12-inch speaker carrying the company's valve reverb and tremolo. At 5 watts through a twelve it reaches saturation at low volume while retaining more low-end body than the smaller-speakered amps in the range, which is the practical argument for this format. Swart build everything hand-wired with high-grade components. It suits blues, roots and studio players who want genuine valve breakup and ambience without stage volume.
