On its own it is open, woody and chewy, with the dynamic response of a cranked tube amp rather than a compressed pedal distortion, which has made it a favourite of Nashville session players for its clarity and dynamics. The Univox UD-50 Uni-Drive is a late-1960s/early-1970s Japanese-made overdrive and booster built into a large, treadle-style enclosure resembling a volume pedal rather than a standard stompbox. Built around silicon transistors, it produces a warm yet open, harmonically rich overdrive that stays natural and crunchy at lower settings and turns fuzzy and dense when pushed further, functioning as both a clean boost and a gritty overdrive depending on how hard it drives a tube amp's front end into breakup. It was famously used by Jimi Hendrix during Record Plant studio sessions and by Jimmy Page during Led Zeppelin's early tours.
