The Fylde Touchstone Mandola is a handbuilt British acoustic instrument, larger and lower-pitched than a mandolin, that Ritchie Blackmore uses in Blackmore's Night, the neo-medieval folk-rock project he formed with Candice Night in 1997 where he plays acoustic guitar, mandola, mandolin, hurdy gurdy, and nyckelharpa alongside his electric work. Blackmore has used the Fylde mandola and a matching Fylde mandolin on record, including during sessions for the album Ghosts of a Rose, where the pair helped shape the project's folk-rock instrumentation. Its larger body and lower range give it a warmer, richer voice than a standard mandolin, suited to the acoustic, historically inflected arrangements Blackmore's Night favors over the hard rock he built his earlier reputation on.
