Hallfredh Acoustic Guitar
Hallfredh · classical guitar
Brian May's Hallfredh acoustic is a cheaply made instrument from a virtually unknown German brand, likely dating to the 1920s or 1930s, which he acquired from his schoolfriend Dave Dilloway in a trade for his own first guitar, an Egmond Toledo his parents had bought him for his seventh or eighth birthday. May modified the Hallfredh himself, adding fretwire near the bridge saddle so the strings would buzz against it when played, deliberately chasing a sitar-like timbre years before sitar sounds became fashionable in rock through bands like the Beatles. He used the modified guitar on early Queen recordings including The Night Comes Down, White Queen, and Jealousy, and still owns it today, confirming in interviews that it still buzzes exactly as he intended.
