Karl Sandoval Custom Polka Dot Flying V

Karl Sandoval · electric guitar

Luthier Karl Sandoval built the original black-and-white polka dot Flying V for Randy Rhoads in 1979, a mahogany-bodied guitar with a modified 60s Danelectro non-adjustable maple neck, a rosewood board with bow-tie inlays, a PAF humbucker in the neck and a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge, and a standard vibrato, which became one of the most instantly recognizable guitars in heavy metal through Rhoads's work with Ozzy Osbourne before his death in 1982. Zakk Wylde, who succeeded Rhoads in Ozzy's band years later, plays a reverse-color tribute built by Sandoval himself, white body with black polka dots rather than Rhoads's original black-with-white-dots scheme, an explicit homage rather than an attempt to pass as the original, letting Wylde honor his predecessor while keeping his own version visually distinct.
