Kay K6533 Value Leader
Kay · electric guitar
Jack White's Kay K6533 Value Leader is the guitar behind one of the most recognizable riffs in modern rock, the low, bass-like line from Seven Nation Army. A modest archtop with a spruce top, maple back and sides, a single DeArmond pickup wired with nothing but an on-off switch, and a floating rosewood bridge, it was originally a tobacco sunburst finish before White covered it in kraft paper in 2001, reportedly to cut down on feedback through the F-holes. Tuned to open A and run through a Big Muff fuzz pedal, playing on the fifteenth fret let White generate frequencies low enough to mimic a bass guitar, a technique built entirely around this specific guitar's quirks that became the foundation of the White Stripes' biggest hit.
