Maestro Echoplex
Maestro · effects unit
The Maestro Echoplex is a tape-based echo unit released under Gibson's Maestro brand beginning in the 1960s, using a loop of magnetic tape and a moving playback head to create warm, physically real repeats rather than the digital delay algorithms that came decades later. It became one of the most historically significant echo units in guitar history, most famously associated with Jimmy Page, who ran his live and studio tones through an Echoplex for much of Led Zeppelin's career, cementing its reputation for warm, saturated slapback and rhythmic repeats. Beyond pure echo, many players also valued the unit's preamp stage for the subtle tube-driven coloration it added even when the echo effect itself was dialed down or bypassed.
