Silvertone Danelectro Electric Guitar
Silvertone · electric guitar
Jimi Hendrix learned to play on a Silvertone series guitar built by Danelectro, a 1956 single-pickup U-1 model with a solid body, single cutaway, and the distinctive coke-bottle-shaped headstock characteristic of Danelectro's Silvertone-branded output for Sears. He named this guitar Betty Jean after a girlfriend, Betty Jean Morgan, and it became his longest-serving instrument, carrying him through his earliest years learning the guitar before he moved on to the Fender Stratocasters that would define his mature sound and legend. Danelectro's Masonite-and-poplar-frame construction and lipstick-tube pickups gave these budget guitars a bright, twangy, distinctively lo-fi character quite different from the fuller Strat tone Hendrix later became synonymous with.
