Mark Knopfler's Pensa-Suhr MK1, built in 1988 by luthier John Suhr at Rudy Pensa's Manhattan guitar shop after Knopfler met Pensa in 1980, was designed specifically to combine the character of a 1961 Fender Stratocaster and a 1958 Gibson Les Paul in one instrument, solving his frustration with constantly switching between the two guitars during performances.
