Pensa Custom MKI
Pensa · electric guitar
Mark Knopfler's Pensa-Suhr MK1, built in 1988 by luthier John Suhr at Rudy Pensa's Manhattan guitar shop after Knopfler met Pensa in 1980, was designed specifically to combine the character of a 1961 Fender Stratocaster and a 1958 Gibson Les Paul in one instrument, solving his frustration with constantly switching between the two guitars during performances. The famous Caramel-finished example carries white EMG active pickups and a Floyd Rose tremolo, and it debuted publicly at the 1988 Nelson Mandela tribute concert before Knopfler first used it on record for Dire Straits' 1991 album On Every Street. He continued playing it in his live shows for decades afterward, until finally selling it at a Christie's auction in 2024.
