The Charvel Model 2 comes from the Japanese-built Model series of 1986-88, positioned above the entry Model 1 with a single bridge humbucker straight to a volume control and a Kahler-style locking tremolo. Stripping out the tone circuit and neck pickup was deliberate: the series was built for the high-gain shred playing the pointed headstock had come to signal.
This is the Fender Custom Shop replica of Eddie Van Halen's original 1978 Frankenstein guitar, hand-built by master builder Chip Ellis to reproduce every detail of the red-white-and-black striped body, the routed single humbucker, and the trem setup of the source instrument. John Frusciante owns one and played it on camera in the Red Hot Chili Peppers video for Dani California, and used it to record the Van Halen-inspired lead on his solo track Eddie. As a faithful replica rather than a stock production model, its specs track the 1978 original: a Boogie Bodies-style basswood body, a single humbucker in the bridge, and a vintage-style Floyd Rose-precursor trem. Frusciante has spoken about how demanding that solo was to record, calling it a mental test of his own tapping and legato technique against Van Halen's style.
