Peter Green's 1954 Fender Stratocaster is an ash-bodied early Strat with the round string tree and other details consistent with 1954-55 production, most of its original knobs swapped for spare parts over the years. It served as his secondary guitar behind the famous 1959 Les Paul known as Greeny, but carries real recorded history of its own: Green used it for Fleetwood Mac's cover of Need Your Love So Bad, the rhythm part on Black Magic Woman, and the slide guitar on Albatross. As an early-50s Strat it has the thinner, brighter, more percussive voice typical of the model's first years, distinct from the fatter humbucker tone people associate with Green's Les Paul work.
Duane Allman's cherry red 1961 Gibson SG, sometimes referred to informally as a Les Paul since Gibson's naming didn't fully shift to SG branding until a couple of years into the model's run, came to him from Dickey Betts, who had played it himself in the earliest days of the Allman Brothers Band before passing it on. Allman used the cherry SG primarily for slide guitar, and it became one of his defining instruments for that style within the band's formative period, distinct from the Les Pauls more commonly associated with his standard lead and rhythm playing. This entry previously carried an incorrectly dated USES connection to a 1968 SG Standard; the edge has been corrected to this 1961 example, the only SG year documented in connection with Allman.
