The Fender 25th Anniversary Stratocaster commemorated the model's 1954 debut with a 1979 limited-numbered run, the first Fender instrument issued that way. The first roughly 500 units shipped in Pearl White, but the finish proved unstable and checked badly, so Fender recalled and refinished most of the run in the metallic Porsche Silver most associated with the model today. Specs reverted to several pre-CBS Strat details players valued: a four-bolt neck plate in place of the three-bolt joint, the truss rod adjustment moved back to the body end rather than the bullet-style headstock adjuster, a gloss maple neck and board, and original grey-bottom single coils in all three positions. It sits in Ritchie Blackmore's guitar collection alongside his more heavily documented Olympic White signature-style Strats.
The Gibson Les Paul Custom Silverburst is a Les Paul Custom finished in the rare metallic silver-to-black burst, a solid mahogany body with maple cap, ebony fretboard and a heavier build than a standard Custom. Adam Jones of Tool made the 1979 example iconic, his number one guitar, modified with a high-output ceramic Seymour Duncan Distortion in the bridge and a reverse-mounted neck humbucker for contrast. The result is a warm, thick, sustaining voice with aggressive bridge snarl and a darker, fuller neck tone, ideal for heavy, atmospheric progressive and alternative metal. It excels at down-tuned riffing and brooding cleans, leaning dark and powerful rather than bright.
