Johnny Winter is one of the guitarists most closely tied to the Gibson Firebird, and his heavily worn 1964 Firebird V, missing its Maestro Vibrola and featuring plugged tremolo and pickup-selector holes, appeared on the cover of his 1976 live album Captured Live! Derek Trucks also plays a 1965 Firebird V, acquired from a St. Louis vintage dealer, using it sparingly in Tedeschi Trucks Band for slide passages where its brightness and sustain help cut through a dense mix, featured on tracks like Made Up Mind and the 2011 album Revelator. The Firebird's reverse body shape, neck-through mahogany and walnut construction, and mini-humbuckers give it a distinctive, brighter, more focused voice than a Les Paul or SG, valued by both players for cutting slide and lead tone.
Duane Allman's cherry red 1961 Gibson SG, sometimes referred to informally as a Les Paul since Gibson's naming didn't fully shift to SG branding until a couple of years into the model's run, came to him from Dickey Betts, who had played it himself in the earliest days of the Allman Brothers Band before passing it on. Allman used the cherry SG primarily for slide guitar, and it became one of his defining instruments for that style within the band's formative period, distinct from the Les Pauls more commonly associated with his standard lead and rhythm playing. This entry previously carried an incorrectly dated USES connection to a 1968 SG Standard; the edge has been corrected to this 1961 example, the only SG year documented in connection with Allman.
