It became a defining piece of progressive rock stage rigs, most famously associated with Rush's Geddy Lee, who used it to add massive low-end pedal tones while simultaneously playing bass and keyboards, as well as with Pink Floyd and Yes during the same era. Its thick, analog synthesizer bass became a signature sound of 1970s arena rock and progressive music.
The Seymour Duncan SH-11 Custom Custom is a bridge humbucker built on the same coil-winding as the SH-5 Custom but with the ceramic magnet swapped for alnico 2. The softer magnet pulls back the treble edge and thickens the midrange, giving a warmer, more compressed and vocal lead voice than the Custom it derives from, while retaining a moderately high output suited to rock and blues-rock.
