The Fender Lead I was built in Fullerton from 1979 to 1982 as an American-made student instrument, with a single humbucker, a hardtail bridge, 21 frets and a body slightly smaller than a Stratocaster's. The Lead II carried two single-coils instead; the Lead I's one humbucker straight to volume and tone makes it the most stripped-down American Fender electric of the period.
