Custom-Built '78 Frankenstrat
Unknown brand · electric guitar
The Frankenstrat is Eddie Van Halens self-built guitar, assembled starting in 1977 from a Stratocaster-style body bought for fifty dollars from Wayne Charvel and Lynn Ellsworths Boogie Bodies shop and an eighty-dollar neck, fitted with a CBS-era Fender headstock and a Gibson PAF humbucker taken from an old ES-335. He initially played it unpainted before applying strips of masking tape in a crisscross stripe pattern and repainting it white in mid-1977, creating the black-and-white striped look that became one of the most recognisable guitars in rock history. It was not built by any guitar company; Van Halen assembled it himself from parts.
