The Roger Mayer Octavia Classic is a faithful remake of the original octave-fuzz pedal Roger Mayer built for Jimi Hendrix, heard on the lead lines of Purple Haze and Fire. It generates a ringing overtone an octave above the played note and blends it with fuzz, so the two effects accentuate each other to create the unmistakable anarchic, ring-modulated octave-up voice. An all-discrete circuit with a wide-bandwidth ferrite transformer and a second amplification stage gives a wider gain range and richer, more complex overtones than digital octave generators. The effect is highly responsive to picking dynamics and to its position in the signal chain, tracking best on single notes high on the neck. It is a staple for psychedelic and classic-rock lead work.
