Univox Uni-Vibe
Univox · pedal
The Univox Uni-Vibe is the legendary late-1960s modulation effect that created a throbbing, hypnotic, lo-fi swirl unlike any other, attempting to emulate a rotating Leslie speaker but becoming an iconic sound unto itself. Built on a photocell-and-lamp circuit, it is neither true chorus nor true phaser but a phaser-meets-chorus voice with a swooshing, watery, psychedelic pulse. In Chorus mode the modulated and dry signals combine for a swirling spatial effect, while Vibrato mode passes only the modulated signal for a cyclic pitch shift, with Speed and Intensity controls setting the rate and depth of the throb. Famously the final pedal in Jimi Hendrix rig, heard most dramatically on his Woodstock Star-Spangled Banner, and central to David Gilmour tones, it suits psychedelic, classic rock, and blues players chasing rich, hazy, rotating modulation textures.
